BARNEVELD, WI—QUANTUM DEVICES, INC. — Quantum
Devices Inc. (QDI), recipient of the 2000 “Space Technology
Hall Of Fame” Award, for their “Innovation of Light
Emitting Diodes for Medical Applications,” is pleased to
announce that they have been selected as the first Wisconsin company
to represent the NASA Marshall Space Flight Center as a “Hallmark
of Success” for the successful commercialization of their
NASA technology, developed under the Small Business Innovation
Research (SBIR) program.
QDI developed the High Emissivity Aluminiferous Lighting Substrate
(HEALS®) technology to provide high intensity, solid state lighting
to grow plants in space for long term manned space missions. The
challenge was to develop a thermal management system that would
provide the equivalent energy of the sun on earth while eliminating
the unwanted heat energy trapped inside the sealed growth chambers.
QDI proposed using a light emitting diode chip. Four light emitting
diode chips would fit comfortably on the head of a straight pin.
One chip is about the size of a grain of salt.
The successful development of the HEALS technology has opened
the door to other exciting market opportunities requiring lighting
systems with similar properties. QDI has successfully designed,
developed, and marketed the HEALS technology, light sources for
Photodynamic Therapy (PDT), a new cancer oncology requiring high
intensity, monochromatic light to turn on a drugs’ cancer
killing properties.
QDI, in collaboration with Dr. Harry T. Whelan of the Medical
College of Wisconsin (MCW), has developed HEALS technology light
sources for pediatric brain tumors and for the prevention of oral
mucositis in pediatric bone marrow transplant patients. Dr. Whelan
is the Distinguished Research Professor at the National Defense
University, Bleser Endowed Professor of Neurology at the Medical
College of Wisconsin and Director of its Hyperbaric Medicine Unit.
Recently QDI, in support of Dr. Whelan’s groundbreaking
research in photobiomodulation (PBM) research, developed the Warfighter’s
Accelerated Recovery by Photobiomodulation, (WARP 10®). The WARP
10 is a hand held, portable, HEALS technology light source developed
for armed forces personnel to self-administer immediate first aid
and care for minor injuries and pain, thereby improving endurance
in combat. The WARP 10 was developed under a Defense Advanced Research
Products Agency (DARPA) SBIR.
In November 2003, QDI introduced an FDA approved, consumer version
of the WARP 10, for temporary relief of minor muscle pain and joint
pain. This includes arthritis and muscle spasms, relieving stiffness,
promoting relaxation of tissue, and to temporarily increase local
blood circulation where applied.
Quantum Devices, Inc. is a privately owned, ISO 9001:2000 13485
(medical device) certified, Wisconsin photobiomodulation technology
corporation. Incorporated in 1989, QDI is celebrating their 15th
year of manufacturing excellence in Barneveld, Wisconsin. QDI is
dedicated to the principle that light provides the power for all
life on earth. We believe the quality, delivery and control of
light is essential to the wellness of man and our advancement
into the future.
